Central Somalia clashes between the Somali National Army (SNA) and Al-Shabaab continue, while authorities are working hard to prevent the extremist group from reasserting control.

30 Killed and 40 Wounded in Central Somalia Clashes

In a major operation conducted in Qay’ad village, Mudug region (Galmudug state), Somali security forces killed at least 30 Al-Shabaab militants, including senior field operatives Mohamed Bashir Muse and Maaday Foodey.

About 40 more fighters were wounded and retreated toward nearby Elbur town.

State media confirmed this was the highest militant death toll in central Somalia in months.
The joint offensive marks a significant victory for the SNA and allied clan militias, which have played a critical role in challenging insurgent control.

    Al-Shabaab Counters with Ambush Tactics

Despite these setbacks, Al-Shabaab released images claiming that its fighters launched an ambush on SNA units near El-dher town in Galgadud, alleging 36 soldiers were killed.

These claims have not been independently verified by government sources.

    Central Somalia Clashes: Large-Scale Attacks

Somali authorities have intensified their counter-insurgency campaign in central regions, declaring “total war” on Al-Shabaab.

Official estimates suggest nearly 4,000 militants have been killed across nationwide operations.

Yet Al-Shabaab continues to wage large-scale attacks.
In February 2025, the group launched a serious offensive in the Middle Shabelle region, including attempts to retake several villages—with both sides reporting heavy casualties.

    Challenges to Sustained Security Gains

Analysts note that Al-Shabaab often re-enters areas once security forces and local militias depart, exploiting gaps to stage ambushes and insurgent operations.

However, Somalia’s growing reliance on clan-based local militias (Ma’awisley), alongside SNA operations, has improved resilience in liberated zones.

These community defense units, formed from farmers and herders, have successfully repelled militant incursions in central areas.

    Central Somalia Clashes Continue

Somali security forces and allied clan militias are intensifying their offensive to thwart Al-Shabaab’s resurgence in central regions.

While the recent operation in Mudug marked a major blow to the insurgents, sustained pressure, intelligent local engagement, and strategic use of local militias will be essential to maintain control and prevent Al-Shabaab from regaining lost ground.
