As Ashura 2025 approaches, many are asking: When is Ashura this year?
What are its virtues? What is the ruling on fasting it?
And is it permissible to fast on a Saturday if it coincides with Ashura?
In this guide, we answer all these questions and more.
When Is Ashura 2025?
According to the majority of Islamic scholars, Ashura falls on the 10th day of Muharram.
In 2025, this corresponds to:
- Saturday, July 5, 2025
- 10 Muharram 1447 AH
Virtues of Ashura
- It Falls in a Sacred Month
Ashura occurs in Muharram, one of the four sacred months in Islam. Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve… of which four are sacred.”
(Surah At-Tawbah: 36)
These sacred months are Dhul-Qa’dah, Dhul-Hijjah, Muharram, and Rajab.
- Following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ fasted on Ashura and encouraged others to do so.
“When the Prophet ﷺ fasted on the day of Ashura and commanded others to fast, they said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, it is a day that the Jews and Christians honor.’
He said: ‘If I live until next year, I will fast the ninth as well.’” (Sahih Muslim)

- Fasting Ashura Expiates a Year’s Sins
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Fasting the day of Ashura, I hope from Allah, will expiate the sins of the previous year.” (Sahih Muslim)
- Commemorates the Salvation of Prophet Musa (Moses)
The Prophet ﷺ found the Jews fasting on Ashura in Medina and asked why.
They said it was the day Allah saved Musa and drowned Pharaoh.
The Prophet ﷺ replied: “We are more entitled to Musa than you,” and he fasted that day and ordered Muslims to fast it. (Sahih Muslim)
Ashura 2025 Comes on Saturday
Ashura 2025 falls on Saturday, July 5.
It is a day of immense spiritual reward, commemorating the salvation of Prophet Musa and offering the chance to expiate a year’s sins.
Fasting on this day—especially alongside the 9th or 11th of Muharram—is a Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ. And yes, fasting on Saturday alone is allowed if it coincides with Ashura.
