Somali Learning Strategy is the main thing the government and the people need to talk about right now because the children have been out of school for way too long. If we want to see a better future we have to change how the kids are taught in the cities and in the small villages far away from the center. This Somali Learning Strategy should not just be about building walls and roofs but it must be about what is inside the books and how the teachers talk to the students every day.

For many years the system was broken because of the wars and the lack of money but now there is a small window of hope to make things right. We need a plan that everyone can follow so that a child in Mogadishu gets the same quality of lessons as a child in a quiet town in the north. Without a real Somali Learning Strategy that works for everyone the nation will keep struggling with poverty and lack of skills for a long time.

    Somali Learning Strategy

Training the teachers to be the best

The first big part of any Somali Learning Strategy must be focused on the men and women who stand in front of the classroom every morning. Many of our current teachers are very brave people who work for almost no money but they often lack the right training to teach modern subjects like science and math. We need to create special centers where these teachers can learn new ways to explain difficult things to the children in a way that is easy to understand.

A strong Somali Learning Strategy would give these teachers a better salary so they don’t have to leave the school to find other jobs to feed their families. When a teacher is happy and well-trained the students will learn much faster and they will be excited to come to school every day. It is the most important investment we can make for the minds of the next generation of leaders and workers.

Building a single curriculum for the whole nation

For a long time different schools were using books from Kenya or Sudan or even Europe and this made the education system very messy and confused. A key goal for the Somali Learning Strategy is to have one single set of books that are written in our own language and show our own history and culture. This helps the kids feel proud of who they are while they are learning about the world outside their borders.

Having a unified Somali Learning Strategy for the curriculum means that if a family moves from one city to another the children can just continue their lessons without any problems. It also makes it easier for the government to create one big exam at the end of the year to see how well everyone is doing. We need our own stories and our own examples in the books so that the learning feels real and important to the life of a Somali child.

Using technology to reach the far away places

In many parts of our country it is very hard to build a permanent school because the people move around with their animals or the roads are very bad. A modern Somali Learning Strategy should use things like radio and tablets to send lessons to these children wherever they are living. We can use solar power to keep the machines running and the kids can listen to the best teachers from the city even if they are sitting under a tree in the countryside.

This part of the Somali Learning Strategy is very smart because it ensures that no child is left behind just because they live far away from the big buildings. Technology can bridge the gap between the rich and the poor and give everyone a fair chance to learn the alphabet and the numbers. It is a way to make the whole country a big classroom that never closes its doors to anyone who wants to learn.

Making sure girls have an equal place in school

We cannot have a successful nation if half of our children stay at home and never learn how to read or write properly. A big part of the Somali Learning Strategy must be to encourage parents to send their daughters to school just like they send their sons.

When a girl goes to school she grows up to be a mother who understands health and education and she helps her whole community to get better. The Somali Learning Strategy should provide safe places for girls to learn and maybe even give some help to the poorest families so they don’t have to choose which child gets an education. Education is a right for every human being and when we open the doors for everyone we see that the whole country starts to move forward much faster. It is the only way to break the cycle of poverty and build a society that is strong and healthy from the inside out.

Fixing the buildings and the school environment

Finally we have to look at the physical places where the kids spend their time because a hot and crowded room is not a good place for the brain to work. As part of the Somali Learning Strategy the government should work with local businessmen to fix the broken windows and provide enough desks for every student.

We also need clean water and toilets in every school so that the children stay healthy and don’t get sick from the dirt. A school should be the most beautiful and safe building in the village so that the kids feel respected and important when they walk through the gates. This physical side of the Somali Learning Strategy shows that the nation values its children and is willing to put in the hard work to give them a decent place to grow.

We must realize that fixing education is not something that happens in one day or one year but it is a long walk that we must take together. The Somali Learning Strategy is our map for that journey and we need to follow it with patience and a lot of heart. If we all work together from the parents to the politicians we can turn our schools into the light that will guide our country out of the darkness.

Every child with a book is a victory for the whole nation and a promise for a better tomorrow. Let us start today and make sure that every school bell is a sound of hope for every Somali person wherever they may be.
