Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro’s office announced on Thursday that his government will begin consultations with the president and parliament in order to recognize the State of Palestine during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, scheduled for September.

    A Decision Amid Rising Tensions

According to the official statement, Portugal intends to take this step following multiple communications with international partners.

The move comes in light of the alarming humanitarian deterioration in Palestinian territories.
Especially Gaza—and growing concerns over a possible annexation of Palestinian land by Israel.

    Cautious and Coordinated Approach

Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa praised the government’s “cautious and well-considered” strategy, highlighting its consistent consultation with European and international allies.

Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel also emphasized that the decision was made after careful analysis, calling it a responsible humanitarian and political stance.

If implemented, Portugal would align with countries like Canada, the United Kingdom, and France, which have also indicated their intention to recognize the State of Palestine next month.
This move is expected to carry significant political and humanitarian weight in the Middle East.
