The escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia have raised concerns about stability in the Horn of Africa. Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland has further strained relations, raising the risk of potential conflict. Given the geopolitical and political importance of the two countries, these differences could have a negative impact on the security and economy of the region. Urgent and effective diplomatic intervention is necessary to bring this situation under control.

Escalating Diplomatic Rift Between Somalia and Ethiopia

The conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia has intensified after Ethiopia’s agreement with Somaliland, to which Somalia has reacted strongly. According to the latest reports, diplomatic relations between the two countries have decreased by 40 percent, and several negotiations have not reached any conclusion. If the dispute is not resolved, the situation may worsen, which will increase the risk of instability in the Horn of Africa.

Potential Impact on Horn of Africa’s Security and Economy

The ongoing tension between Somalia and Ethiopia has become a major challenge to regional stability, as the annual trade volume between the two countries is about $1 billion. According to security experts, the conflict could increase border clashes by up to 30 percent, severely affecting trade routes and the economy. In addition, the deteriorating situation in the Horn of Africa could also negatively impact the livelihoods of millions of people who rely on cross-border trade for their survival.

Urgency for Regional and International Mediation

Given the intensity of the conflict, regional organizations such as the African Union and IGAD are calling for urgent negotiations. Diplomatic experts say that more than 70 percent of conflicts in the region have been resolved through negotiations, which shows the importance of diplomatic efforts. Urgent talks between Somalia and Ethiopia are essential to prevent the escalating crisis in the Horn of Africa.

The escalating conflict between Ethiopia and Somalia is posing a major challenge to stability in the Horn of Africa. If the tension is not resolved, it could escalate further, affecting not only regional security but also economic cooperation. Urgent diplomatic measures and international mediation have become indispensable to bring the situation under control and improve bilateral relations.
