Somali higher education is a topic that is becoming more and more important as the country works to rebuild itself after so many years of trouble and war. You see many young people walking the streets of the capital with books in their hands because they know that a degree is the only way to get a good job and help their families. This growth in Somali higher education is really centered around the famous Somali National University which was the first big place for learning in the country.

It was closed for a long time during the civil war but when it opened its doors again a few years ago it was a huge symbol of hope for everyone who lives there. Now you have thousands of students studying things like law and medicine and engineering because they want to be the ones who fix the roads and the hospitals in the future.

The system for Somali higher education is not perfect and it still has a lot of challenges like not having enough electricity or enough new books for the library. But the spirit of the students is very strong and they are willing to study in difficult conditions just to get their diplomas. Many of the professors are coming back from other countries to teach the next generation because they believe that Somali higher education is the backbone of a strong nation. It is amazing to see how much people value a classroom when they know what it is like to not have one for so many years.

The main pillars of Somali higher education

When you look at the different colleges you can see that the private sector has also stepped in to provide more options for people who can afford it. This competition in Somali higher education has led to more variety in the subjects you can study like computer science or business management.

However the Somali National University remains the most prestigious because it is the state school and it represents the history of the land. The government is trying to put more money into Somali higher education so that even poor students can go to school for free or for a very low cost. This is the only way to make sure that the smart kids from the countryside also have a chance to become doctors or leaders one day.

Why the university matters for the future

Education is the best weapon against the groups that want to cause chaos and that is why improving Somali higher education is a security issue as well as a social one. When a young man has a seat in a university he is not going to join a militia or do something dangerous because he has a future to look forward to.

The quality of Somali higher education is also getting better because of partnerships with other universities in Turkey or the Arab world or even in Europe.
These partners help with training the teachers and providing the technology that is needed for a modern school. This global connection makes Somali higher education feel like it is part of the rest of the world again which is very exciting for the youth.

Another big part of the story is the women who are now making up a huge percentage of the student body. In the old days it was mostly men but now you see many girls graduating at the top of their classes in Somali higher education institutions. They are becoming the new voices in the media and the new workers in the banks and this is changing the way society looks at what women can do. Without the push for better Somali higher education these changes would take a much longer time to happen. It is a slow process but you can see the results every time a new graduation ceremony happens in a big tent in Mogadishu.

Challenges that still remain for students

Of course there are still problems with some schools not being properly registered or not having the right accreditation. This is a big worry for students in Somali higher education because they don’t want to spend four years studying and then find out their degree is not recognized in other countries. The ministry of education is working hard to set standards so that every school provides a high quality of teaching. If they can fix these small details then Somali higher education will truly become one of the best systems in the region. It just takes time and a lot of hard work from the government and the private owners of the schools.

The students themselves are very active in student unions and they often debate about politics and the future of their country during their lunch breaks. This environment of thinking and talking is what makes Somali higher education so special right now. It is a place where new ideas are born and where the future leaders are meeting each other for the first time. Even with the sounds of the city around them the campus feels like a quiet place where the only thing that matters is the lesson on the chalkboard.
