Somalia has accused Ethiopia of smuggling weapons into Puntland, where the security situation is already tense. Government sources say that these illegal weapons are exacerbating local conflicts and hindering peace efforts in the region.

The allegation has raised tensions between the two countries and calls for an investigation into the issue. This situation is being seen as a violation of international peace agreements, which has become a cause of global concern. Both countries are being urged to take immediate action to avoid further unrest.

Impact of Weapon Smuggling on Regional Stability

Illegal arms shipments have led to a sharp increase in local violence in Puntland, where more than 40 percent of conflicts are fueled by these weapons. According to officials, the weaponry empowers militia groups, undermines local governance structures and hampers peace-building efforts. Due to this situation, security problems in the region have increased by 30%, creating more difficulties for economic and social development.

Diplomatic Tensions Between Somalia and Ethiopia

Allegations of arms smuggling have strained relations between Somalia and Ethiopia, leading to increased diplomatic tensions. According to reports, border disputes between the two countries have increased by 25 percent since the allegations. The complex situation has highlighted the need for international mediation, and pressure is mounting on the two governments to resolve the dispute through negotiations to avoid further chaos.

The Role of International Law in Preventing Arms Trafficking

International laws, such as the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), aim to prevent illegal arms trafficking. However, according to current data, more than 50 percent of arms trafficking cases remain unreported or unsolved. The failure to effectively implement these regulations is fueling regional instability, and the United Nations has identified increased arms trafficking in disputed areas such as Somalia and Puntland.

Arms trafficking in Puntland is fueling regional tensions and further straining relations between Somalia and Ethiopia. Effective international enforcement of laws to prevent illicit arms trafficking is essential for peacebuilding and conflict resolution. Both countries should enhance cooperation to protect regional security and prevent instability.
