The Somaliland Parliament has strongly condemned the recent visit of Somali Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre to Lasanod, a city at the heart of the ongoing territorial dispute between Somalia and Somaliland. The Parliament argues that this visit undermines Somaliland’s sovereignty and increases tensions in the region. The Somali government continues to assert its claim over the area, while Somaliland remains steadfast in its demand for independence.

Somaliland Parliament’s Response to Somali PM’s Lasanod Visit

The Somaliland Parliament strongly condemned the visit by Somalia’s Prime Minister to Lasanod, a contested city between Somaliland and Somalia. The parliament argued that the visit undermines Somaliland’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, given the region’s self-declared independence since 1991. The condemnation reflects the longstanding tension between the breakaway region and the Somali government over the control of Lasanod, a strategically significant city.

Impact of the Visit on Somaliland-Somalia Relations

The Somali Prime Minister’s visit has further strained the already fragile relationship between Somaliland and Somalia. The visit was viewed as an assertive move by Somalia to reassert control over the region. Experts believe that this could potentially lead to more military and diplomatic confrontations, especially as Somaliland continues to push for international recognition and resist Somali federal authority.

    Territorial Dispute: Lasanod’s Strategic Importance

Lasanod holds significant strategic and economic value due to its location and proximity to key trade routes. The city is a focal point in the territorial dispute between Somaliland and Somalia, with both sides claiming ownership. The city’s control is crucial for securing political influence in the region, as well as access to resources that would benefit either party’s economic future.

Somaliland Parliament’s Call for Sovereignty and Independence

In response to the Somali PM’s visit, the Somaliland Parliament reiterated its call for international recognition of Somaliland as an independent state. The parliament emphasized the importance of respecting Somaliland’s self-declared independence and sovereignty. It argued that any intervention or visit by Somali officials without recognition of Somaliland’s status is an infringement on its rights as a self-governing entity.
