Somali social customs are the beautiful way that people in our country show their respect for each other and keep their history alive through many generations. when you visit a house in mogadishu or a small village in the north you will see that hospitality is the most important thing for every family. because somali social customs are built on being kind to strangers you will always be offered a cup of sweet tea with milk or some delicious food like anjero before you even say why you came. it is a tradition that makes everyone feel like they belong to a big family and it is what keeps the community strong even when times are very hard.

The core of daily somali social customs

the first thing you notice about social customs is how people treat their guests like kings no matter if they have a lot of money or just a little bit. if someone knocks on your door you must welcome them inside and give them the best place to sit because that is the way of our ancestors. these social customs also mean that the elders are always the ones who speak first and give their blessing to the young people when there is a meeting.

it is a sign of great respect to listen to the old men and women because they have the wisdom of many years and they know the stories of the clans better than anyone else. when there is a wedding or a big party you will see the men dancing the danto and the women wearing their bright guntiino dresses which is another part of the social customs that brings a lot of joy to the day.

Another big part of the social customs is the way people share their food together from a big plate called a laxooh or a tray of rice and meat. eating together with your hands is a symbol of unity and it shows that there is no gap between the people sitting around the table. if you are part of the social customs you know that you never eat alone if there is someone nearby who might be hungry.

sharing is not just a nice thing to do but it is a rule that everyone follows to make sure that nobody in the neighborhood goes to sleep with an empty stomach. this kindness is at the heart of our culture and it is something that makes every somali person very proud of their heritage.

The role of elders in somali social customs and peace

we also have very specific somali social customs when it comes to solving problems or making peace between different groups of people. instead of going to a cold court building the elders sit under a big tree and talk for many hours until everyone is happy with the solution.

this is part of the somali social customs that has saved the country many times because it focuses on forgiveness and bringing the people back together. the elders use poems and wise sayings to explain their points and everyone listens very carefully because the words have a lot of power in our society. without these somali social customs it would be much harder to keep the peace and make sure that everyone follows the local laws of the community.

Even when somali people move to other countries like the uk or the us they still try to keep their somali social customs alive in their new homes. they gather for eid and they make sure the children learn how to speak the language and how to show respect to their aunts and uncles. it is a way to stay connected to the land even if they are very far away across the ocean. the somali social customs are like a thread that ties all of us together no matter where we go in the world. we teach the kids that they must always be generous and that they must never forget where they came from or the values that their grandparents taught them.

Protecting the future of somali social customs

The somali social customs are what make our nation unique and beautiful in the eyes of the rest of the world. it is about the smell of frankincense in the room and the sound of people laughing and sharing stories late into the night. we should always protect our somali social customs and make sure they don’t disappear in the modern world where everyone is in a hurry.
