Traditional Learning Methods have been the foundation of our society for hundreds of years and they still play a very big role in how young Somalis learn their values. In every village and city you can find the “Dugsi” where children sit together to memorize the holy book and learn about their culture and the Arabic language. These Traditional Learning Methods are very important because they build a strong character and keep our history alive through oral stories and poetry. However many parents today are also looking at schools that use a more global style of teaching with computers and science labs. This mix of Traditional Learning Methods and new styles is causing a big debate about what is best for a student who wants to go to university or get a high-paying job. While the Traditional Learning ways focus on memory and discipline the new schools focus on solving problems and thinking for yourself. We are seeing that the most successful students are often those who spend their mornings in the modern classroom and their afternoons practicing Traditional Learning ways in the local community center. This Traditional Learning Methods approach ensures that our kids don’t lose their roots while they are busy learning about the rest of the world and how technology works.

The reason why we still need Traditional Learning ways in 2026 is that they teach respect and community in a way that modern books sometimes forget. But if we only use Traditional Learning Methods our youth might struggle to compete with students from other countries who are learning how to write code or speak multiple languages. The government in Mogadishu is trying to create a “National Curriculum” that tries to take the best parts of the Traditional Learning ways and put them inside a modern school building. This means that a student can study the Quran and the Somali language but also spend an hour in a laboratory looking at cells under a microscope. This balance is hard to find but it is the only way to move our country forward without losing who we are as a people. Many of the elders believe that Traditional Learning ways are the only way to keep the youth away from bad influences but the young people want to explore new ideas. By respecting the Traditional Learning Methods while also building more universities we can create a generation that is both smart and proud of their heritage. It is not about choosing one over the other but about making sure the Traditional Learning ways stay strong as we build a digital future for everyone.

Differences Between Modern and Traditional Learning ways
First Traditional Learning ways usually happen in a circle on the floor while modern schools use desks and chairs that face a whiteboard at the front. Second in Traditional Learning ways the teacher is the only source of knowledge but in modern classes students are encouraged to ask “why” and look for answers on the internet. Third Traditional Learning ways focus heavily on the Somali and Arabic languages while modern systems often introduce English and other foreign subjects.
Fourth the Traditional Learning ways rely on physical tablets called “Loh” for writing while the modern schools are starting to use tablets made of glass and plastic. Fifth Traditional Learning ways are often much cheaper for poor families because they don’t require expensive uniforms or heavy textbooks from overseas. Sixth and finally the Traditional Learning ways are better at teaching the history of our clans and our land which is something that is often missing from the global books used in modern private schools.

Harmonizing Our Future with Traditional Learning Methods
If we want Somalia to be a leader in the Horn of Africa we must protect our Traditional Learning Methods because they are what makes us unique. We cannot just copy what Europe or America is doing and expect it to work perfectly in our culture without the Traditional Learning Methods as a base. The best teachers today are the ones who can explain a complex math problem using examples from our nomadic life and our traditional stories. This makes the lessons feel real and helps the students remember what they have learned much better than if they were just reading a dry book.

The goal of every school whether it uses Traditional Learning Methods or modern ones is to make the child a better person for their community. We should be proud that we have such a long history of learning and we should use that energy to build the best schools in the region. The Traditional Learning Methods will always have a place in our hearts and our homes even as we send our children to study engineering or medicine in the big cities. By staying true to our roots we can reach for the stars and build a nation that is both wise and modern.
