Jorge Moreira da Silva, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), will start a pivotal five-day tour across Ethiopia, Somalia, and Sudan.

The mission underscores the UN’s commitment to advancing sustainable development, peace, and humanitarian relief across the Horn of Africa.

UN Office for Project Services Contributions by Country

Somalia: Supporting Peace, State-Building, and Climate Resilience

    In Somalia, UNOPS continues to:

    • Strengthen the institutional capacity of Somali authorities
    • Support projects in governance, public health, and national security
    • Aid in post-crisis reconstruction and disaster preparedness
    • Develop climate-resilient infrastructure for long-term peace and stability

Ethiopia: Advancing Sustainable Development and Food Security

UN Office for Project Services is actively partnering with stakeholders in Ethiopia to support national and international priorities, including:

    • Strengthening healthcare and educational systems
    • Enhancing food security and modernizing the agriculture sector
    • Expanding clean energy access in off-grid communities
    • Implementing green solutions to build climate-resilient health services

Sudan: Responding to One of the World’s Largest Humanitarian Crises

With over 25 million people—half of Sudan’s population—in urgent need of aid, UNOPS is playing a critical role by:

    • Rebuilding and upgrading health infrastructure
    • Improving access to clean and safe drinking water
    • Supporting peacekeeping efforts aimed at protecting civilians

Strengthening UNOPS Engagement in the Horn of Africa

During his official visit, Mr. Moreira da Silva will engage with national governments, civil society leaders, and key development partners.

The focus of the discussions will center on how UNOPS can deliver practical, scalable solutions that amplify the impact of humanitarian assistance, peacebuilding, and development projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This high-level tour also aims to deepen understanding of local needs and explore opportunities for expanding UNOPS operations in regions affected by conflict, climate change, and institutional fragility.

    Accelerating Impact Through Strategic Partnerships

The UN Office for Project Services Executive Director visit marks a significant step in reinforcing collaboration between the United Nations and African nations.

By aligning efforts with local governments and global development stakeholders, UNOPS aims to create a greater, long-lasting impact across sectors vital to human development and peace.
