In a renewed commitment to sustainable development in emerging nations, the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) has funded a major social housing project in the city of Berbera, Somaliland, with a total investment of AED 27.5 million (approximately USD 7.5 million).

300 Integrated Housing Units to Enhance Quality of Life

The project includes the construction of 300 housing units with varying designs and sizes, categorized into three main types.

In addition, it features comprehensive infrastructure work, such as:

    • Drinking water supply networks
    • Sanitation and stormwater drainage systems
    • Internal road construction
    • Landscaping and green spaces
    • Provision of essential service facilities

The project aims to improve living conditions for around 1,500 people, promote community stability, and support local economic development.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals

Abu Dhabi Fund for Development initiative directly supports Goal 11 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which aims to ensure access to safe, affordable housing and basic services for all by 2030.

The Inauguration of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development Project

The inauguration ceremony was attended by:

    • Mohamed Ali Abdi, Vice President of the Republic of Somaliland
    • Dr. Abdullah Mohamed Al Naqbi, UAE Commercial Office Director in Somaliland
    • Several high-ranking officials from both countries

    Statements from Officials

Mohammed Saif Al Suwaidi, Director General of Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, stated:

“This project is part of our long-standing commitment to sustainable development in partner countries.

Securing adequate housing is a key pillar of social stability and economic growth.

We are proud to partner with the Government of Somaliland in delivering a project that will have a lasting positive impact—providing housing for 1,500 people, creating jobs, and stimulating economic activity in the project area.”

Mohamed Ali Abdi expressed deep gratitude to the UAE, emphasizing that the project is a strategic step toward improving the quality of life in Berbera by offering safe and fully integrated housing units for hundreds of families.

He added that the initiative goes beyond housing by also enhancing infrastructure, providing essential services, and generating employment, all of which contribute to sustainable local development.

AED 330 Million UAE Grant Supporting Strategic Projects

It is worth noting that Abu Dhabi Fund for Development is administering a UAE grant of AED 330 million designated for funding a package of strategic development projects in Somaliland.
