In a decisive counterterrorism operation, Somali National Army (SNA) troops, supported by African Union peacekeepers, killed at least 70 Al-Shabaab terrorists in the Lower Shabelle region, according to a statement released by Somalia’s Defense Ministry on Monday.

Suicide Attack Foiled by Somali Forces

During the operation, Al-Shabaab terrorists attempted a suicide bombing using two vehicles packed with explosives.

Somali forces responded swiftly and effectively, neutralizing both threats before they could inflict damage. The ministry praised the soldiers’ vigilance and bravery in preventing the attack.

Despite the success, the battle resulted in two SNA soldiers killed and 12 wounded, highlighting the ongoing risks faced by Somali forces in their fight against terrorism.

“Silent Storm” Targets Al-Shabaab Strongholds in Bariire

The operation, code-named “Silent Storm,” focused on dismantling Al-Shabaab’s strategic bases in Bariire, a key agricultural town located 73 kilometers southwest of Mogadishu.

The Somali army, in collaboration with the Ugandan Defense Forces (UDF) under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), broke through militant defenses and inflicted a major defeat on the extremist group.

This offensive follows a similar joint operation in the same region just days earlier, where over 50 Al-Shabaab terrorists were reportedly killed, signaling a sustained military campaign to reclaim territory and weaken the group’s influence.

    Al-Shabaab’s Enduring Threat in Somalia

Al-Shabaab has been a persistent threat in Somalia for more than 16 years, frequently targeting security forces, government officials, and civilians.

The recent operations underscore Somalia’s commitment—alongside international partners—to restoring peace and stability in the region.
