The Federal Government of Somalia has ramped up its counter-terrorism efforts against Al-Shabaab terror group.
This is through a series of large-scale military operations, strategic intelligence missions, and sweeping financial crackdowns.
These coordinated efforts aim to reclaim territory, dismantle terrorist infrastructure, and reinforce national stability in the face of persistent threats.
Latest Operation Against Al-Shabaab Terror Group
In the latest offensive, the Ministry of Defense announced the killing of approximately 70 Al-Shabaab militants in a complex military operation dubbed “Silent Storm.”
The operation took place in the agricultural town of Bariire, located in the Lower Shabelle region, roughly 73 kilometers south of Mogadishu.
Conducted in collaboration with Ugandan forces under the African Union mission, the operation successfully foiled a suicide attack involving two car bombs.
However, two Somali soldiers were killed, and 12 others sustained injuries.
Somalia’s Elite Intelligence Unit Gashaan Destroyed Al-Shabaab Terror Group Launchpads
Simultaneously, Somalia’s elite intelligence unit Gashaan executed a precision strike in the Omar Bire area, resulting in the death of five Al-Shabaab operatives and the destruction of fortified positions used as launchpads for attacks on civilians and infrastructure.
The operation was based on actionable intelligence and forms part of a broader pre-emptive strategy to dismantle terrorist cells before they strike.
Freezing Over $1 Million in Suspicious Accounts
In a parallel effort to weaken the group’s financial backbone, the Ministry of Defense—working with the Office of the Attorney General—revealed the dismantling of a massive terror financing network.
Investigations uncovered 250 money laundering cases, leading to the freezing of over $1 million in suspicious accounts.
In total, more than 3,500 bank accounts were reviewed during the operation, marking a significant blow to Al-Shabaab terror group economic structure.
Despite Gains Still There is Vulnerabilities
Security analysts note that Somalia’s counterterrorism strategy has evolved into a comprehensive model that combines military strength, intelligence accuracy, and financial disruption.
Despite these gains, experts caution that coordination gaps and limited resources in remote areas remain vulnerabilities.
Strengthening logistical support and closing these gaps are essential to prevent Al-Shabaab from regaining control in vacated territories.
