The United Kingdom has pledged more than $30 million to strengthen Somalia security forces and stabilize the country.

The announcement was made during a donor conference at the UN General Assembly, reaffirming Britain’s long-term support for Somalia’s security and counterterrorism efforts.

Breakdown of the $30 Million Package

The funding will be split into two main allocations:

    • $8 million for the UN Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS)
    • $22 million for the African Union’s peacekeeping mission (AUSSOM)

These funds will cover essential supplies such as food rations, medical equipment, tents, and casualty evacuation for Somali troops.

The support aims to ensure that Somali forces can gradually assume greater responsibility for national security as international peacekeepers scale down.

    Strengthening Somalia Security Forces

Somalia has been working to build up its army and police to take over from African Union troops who have fought al-Shabaab for years.

The group still controls parts of rural Somalia and frequently launches attacks in Mogadishu and other cities.

Strengthening Somali forces with logistics, training, and medical support is seen as a key step toward stability.

The $8 million allocated to UNSOS will directly support 18,900 Somali National Army and Police personnel nationwide.

While the $22 million for AUSSOM will help African Union forces coordinate with Somali troops to clear al-Shabaab strongholds and hand over control to local authorities.

    UK’s Long-Term Partnership with Somalia

With this new pledge, Britain’s total contribution to Somalia’s security has reached nearly $140 million since 2021.

Development Minister Baroness Chapman emphasized the importance of the commitment, stating:

“The UK has been a committed partner to Somalia for over a decade, recognizing that its security is vital to regional stability and prosperity.”

African-Led Solutions Backed by International Support

The UK has consistently highlighted the importance of African-led security solutions supported by international partners.

The funding demonstrates Britain’s belief that regional stability, counterterrorism, and economic progress are achievable when local forces are equipped to protect their communities.
