The Federal Government of Somalia has taken a major step toward full regional integration by beginning the process of joining the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) — the parliamentary arm of the East African Community (EAC).
This marks the first time Somalia will have official representation within the regional legislature.
Who Will Choose Somalia’s EALA Representatives?
The Speakers of both houses of Somalia’s Federal Parliament have announced the formation of a special selection committee to choose the country’s EALA representatives.
The committee is chaired by MP Mohamed Abdullahi Hassan (Nuux), with Senator Zamzam Ibrahim Ali as deputy chair.
Their task is to prepare a shortlist of qualified candidates to be presented to the full parliament for approval.

Somalia Steps Towards Full Regional Integration
This development follows Somalia’s admission into the EAC in 2023, a move that positioned the country to participate in the region’s economic, political, and security frameworks.
By joining the EALA — headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania — Somalia will gain a direct platform to advocate for its national interests.
Including cross-border trade, infrastructure, and regional security cooperation.
Commitment to Active Engagement
Government officials have described the initiative as a historic milestone reflecting Somalia’s commitment to active engagement in East African affairs.
The process aligns with the nation’s broader vision of strengthening diplomatic ties, improving economic integration, and contributing to regional stability.
Political Recovery
Once Somalia’s representatives are elected, they will join delegates from the other eight EAC member states, solidifying Somalia’s return to the regional stage as a full participant in one of Africa’s fastest-growing economic blocs.
This step not only enhances Somalia’s international credibility but also symbolizes its political recovery and growing role in shaping the future of East African cooperation.
