Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to Somalia’s growth and stability by pledging €75 million (approximately USD 80 million) to support the country’s social and economic development over the next two years.

Germany and Somalia agreement was signed in Mogadishu by Somalia’s Minister of Planning, Investment, and Economic Development, Mohamed Abdirahman Beene Beene.
As well as representatives from Germany’s Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The cooperation focuses on key sectors such as technical and vocational education and training (TVET), water resource management, agriculture, and rural development.

These priorities are directly aligned with Somalia’s National Transformation Plan (2025–2029) and the government’s ongoing economic reforms.

Building on Germany and Somalia Partnership Since 1961

The relationship between Germany and Somalia dates back more than six decades.
Beginning in 1961, when the two nations first established diplomatic ties.

Over the years, Germany has remained one of Somalia’s most reliable development partners, providing consistent assistance through both bilateral and multilateral frameworks.

Germany’s support has included infrastructure rehabilitation, renewable energy initiatives, governance reforms, and youth employment programs.

The new €75 million agreement continues this legacy, reflecting Berlin’s recognition of Somalia’s progress toward peace, state-building, and economic recovery.

    Supporting Education, Skills, and Employment

A major component of Germany’s latest commitment focuses on technical and vocational education and training (TVET) — an area critical for Somalia’s young and rapidly growing population.

Through cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Germany has previously supported training centers that equip Somali youth with practical skills in construction, mechanics, agriculture, and digital literacy.

By expanding these programs, the Somali government hopes to empower local communities, create employment opportunities, and reduce dependence on foreign aid.

Minister Beene Beene emphasized that this approach reflects the government’s broader vision of “a self-reliant, skilled, and digitally connected Somalia.”

Enhancing Water, Agriculture, and Rural Development

Germany’s new funding package will also address critical water resource management and agricultural productivity challenges in Somalia — areas vital to food security and rural livelihoods.

Through partnerships with agencies like KfW Development Bank and GIZ, Germany has already helped rehabilitate irrigation systems, support sustainable farming practices, and improve access to clean water in drought-affected regions such as Gedo, Bay, and Lower Shabelle.

Germany and Somalia newly signed agreement will build on these successes, expanding climate-resilient agriculture projects and promoting sustainable water use to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Aligning Donor Support with National Priorities

Minister Beene Beene underscored that the cooperation framework would ensure donor funding is strategically aligned with Somalia’s national development priorities.

He praised Germany’s transparent and long-term approach to aid delivery, noting that it serves as a model for other development partners.

“This agreement will guide development projects over the next two years.

On behalf of the Somali government and people, I sincerely thank the German government and citizens for their continuous support in advancing Somalia’s development agenda,” he stated.

Germany and Somalia Own a Shared Vision for Sustainable Growth

The latest cooperation is part of the biennial development consultations between Somalia and Germany, a mechanism that allows both sides to review ongoing projects and set new investment goals.

In recent years, Germany’s aid has also supported good governance reforms, public finance management, and renewable energy projects, all contributing to Somalia’s resilience and self-sufficiency.

Officials confirmed that the newly pledged funds will be disbursed promptly to accelerate implementation and ensure measurable impact across target sectors.

Germany and Somalia Cooperation Paves the Way for More Prosperous Somalia

As Somalia continues to rebuild after decades of conflict, Germany’s consistent engagement represents a vote of confidence in the nation’s future.

By investing in people, infrastructure, and sustainable growth, Germany and Somalia are paving the way for a stronger, more prosperous Somalia at the heart of the Horn of Africa.
