Fateh’s candidacy, Minneapolis Mayor, Jacob Frey won his third term on Wednesday after a second round of ranked-choice ballots gave him the required majority, defeating Omar Fateh in a race of 15 candidates.
The results showed Frey with nearly 50% of the vote, while Omar Fateh had about 44%, after the second round of recounts were included. On election night, Jacob Frey was already leading in the first round with 42%, to Omar Fateh’s 32%.

FATEH’S CANDIDACY: THE ELECTION’S LOCKHORNS
Fateh’s candidacy, Minneapolis election officials said that voter turnout broke the city’s previous record, with more than 147,000 people casting ballots, nearly 55% of registered voters.
Jacob Frey, a moderate Democrat who was first elected in 2017, has based his campaign on a decline in crime compared to previous years, changes in policing under court agreements, and a housing plan that combines affordable housing with commercial buildings in the public market.

He also pointed out city data showing that rents are rising slowly and that homelessness has declined.

Fateh’s candidacy, Omar Fateh, a candidate who has garnered significant support from the Muslim community and youth, wrote on social media:
“Thank you, Minneapolis! While the results were not what we wanted, I am deeply grateful to everyone who supported our public campaign. I will continue to fight with you to build the city we deserve. Move forward.”
