Foodborne illness risk is something that every family needs to think about when they are preparing dinner or eating out at a local restaurant. Many people do not realize that tiny germs like bacteria viruses and parasites can hide in perfectly normal looking food and make you very sick. Every year millions of people around the world suffer from stomach aches vomiting and fever because of something bad they ate earlier in the day. This problem can happen to anyone but it is especially dangerous for young children old people and anyone who is already dealing with health issues.

Understanding the foodborne illness risk in daily life

The main reason why Foodborne illness risk stays so high in our modern world is because of how our food travels from farms to our plates. If a worker does not wash their hands properly at a factory or if a truck does not keep the meat cold enough germs will grow very fast. When you bring that food into your kitchen you might look at it and think it smells fine but the danger is already there. This means you have to be very careful with how you handle every single ingredient before you put it in your mouth.

Another major factor that increases the Foodborne illness risk is leaving cooked food sitting on the kitchen counter for too long. Germs love warm temperatures and they can multiply double in size in just twenty minutes if the room is hot. If you have leftovers from lunch you should always put them in the fridge right away instead of waiting until the evening. It is a very simple habit that can save you from a horrible night of feeling sick and running to the bathroom constantly.

Common germs that raise the foodborne illness risk

When doctors talk about this problem they usually mention a few specific bacteria that cause the most trouble for our bodies. One of the most famous ones is Salmonella which often lives in raw eggs and chicken if they are not cooked completely. This specific germ contributes heavily to the global Foodborne illness risk because chicken is a meal that people eat almost every day. Another bad one is E coli which can get onto fresh vegetables like lettuce if the farm water is dirty. That is why washing your salads under clean running water is just as important as cooking your beef until it is hot.

Simple steps to lower the foodborne illness risk

Fortunately you do not need to be a scientist to protect your home from these hidden dangers in your breakfast or dinner. The first and most important rule to minimize the Foodborne illness risk is to wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least twenty seconds before touching food. You should also use different cutting boards for your raw meat and your fresh fruits so the juices do not mix together. If you use the same knife for everything without washing it in between you are spreading the germs yourself.

Another great way to fight the Foodborne illness risk is to make sure your meat reaches the right temperature when you cook it. Buying a cheap food thermometer is a smart investment because you cannot always tell if a burger is safe just by looking at the brown color. You need to make sure the inside is hot enough to kill any hidden bacteria that might be waiting to attack your stomach. Also you should always check the expiration dates on milk and cheese before using them.

In conclusion ignoring the Foodborne illness risk is a big mistake that can lead to serious hospital visits and a lot of pain for your loved ones. It is very easy to stay safe if you just follow basic cleanliness rules and keep your kitchen clean every day. Your body works hard to keep you healthy but it needs your help to keep the bad germs away from your plate. Taking a few extra minutes to wash your hands and cook things properly will ensure that your meals give you strength instead of making you weak.
