Puntland security forces withdrew from their main base in northern Galkayo on July 27 2026 after major political tension with local Puntland authorities escalated rapidly. The special security units known as PSF packed up their military equipment and moved down south into the Barahley neighborhood which falls under Galmudug administration. This sudden move happened right after new Puntland military reinforcements showed up near the northern airport area. Once Puntland security forces left the base regional authorities brought in heavy machinery and completely demolished the old headquarters building to prevent anyone from returning.

Escalating clashes involving Puntland security forces
The sudden relocation comes directly on the heels of violent clashes that broke out last week between local troops and Puntland forces in the Laag area located about 30 kilometers outside Bosaso. During those heavy fights regional government troops managed to capture eight military vehicles along with taking several soldiers from the PSF group as prisoners. These events created a huge rift that made it almost impossible for Puntland security forces to remain stationed in the northern part of the city.
In an official statement released by the Puntland presidential office regional leaders stated clearly that they no longer recognize Puntland security forces as a legitimate security organ. They also added that there are no federal troops authorized to operate within Puntland territory at this moment.
Shift in power and regional security dynamics
Moving south across administrative borders allows Puntland forces to avoid further direct clashes with local government troops in Galkayo. However this shift raises big concerns about long term stability and cooperation between neighboring states like Puntland and Galmudug. When Puntland forces set up operations in Galmudug territory it changes how local commanders handle daily security patrols and airport protection.

Commanders from Puntland forces have not issued a detailed statement regarding their future plans in Galmudug. Meanwhile residents living near the former base in northern Galkayo watched as bulldozers flattened the site where Puntland security forces used to stay for years.
Community leaders hope both sides can find a peaceful solution soon. If tensions keep rising between regional leaders and Puntland forces it could create a security gap that dangerous militant groups might exploit.
