In February 2025, Puntland forces launched a major military operation against Islamic State (IS) militants in Somalia, retaking large areas and key bases. The operation was aimed at targeting IS strongholds in the Bari area, disrupting their operations and reducing their strength.

Puntland forces were supported by airstrikes on key Islamic State strongholds, which aided their operations during the offensive. As a result of this operation, the local population that was previously under the control of IS gained independence. Puntland officials emphasized that international assistance is needed for lasting peace and stability in the region.

Puntland’s Strategic Offensive Against IS Militants

In early 2025, Puntland forces recaptured 250 square kilometers of land from Islamic State militants and destroyed more than 50 key IS positions in the Bari region. The operation, codenamed “Operation Halak”, was aimed at neutralizing a key IS hub in Somalia and disrupting their activities.

The operation marked a significant breakthrough in efforts in Puntland, where IS-held areas have reportedly been reduced by 40%. The offensive was the largest military operation in the region since the initial Puntland campaign against IS in 2016.

Impact of the Puntland Operation on Local Communities

After the liberation of the territories, it is estimated that more than 100,000 citizens benefited from improved security and stability. During the first IS rule in these areas, the population faced strict laws and the constant threat of violence. As a result of this operation, the recruitment rate of militants has decreased by 35 percent. Although satisfaction was expressed over the success of the operation, challenges remain in terms of rebuilding local economies and infrastructure.

International Support for Counter-Terrorism Efforts in Somalia

The Puntland operation was strongly supported by international partners, including the US military, which carried out targeted airstrikes against IS positions. These airstrikes played an important role during the operation, with more than 15 airstrikes reported in the first month.

International agencies such as the United Nations and the European Union have pledged $50 million in aid to support additional security measures for Puntland. This financial support highlights the importance of global cooperation against terrorism in Somalia.

The Role of Airstrikes in Disrupting IS Operations

Airstrikes were key in targeting IS leadership and logistics. According to reports, more than 20 key militants were killed and more than 20 weapons caches were destroyed as a result of these attacks.

Targeted attacks by the US military affected IS command and control, leading to the dispersal of many militants. Experts estimate that about 60 percent of the success of the attack was due to the effects of airstrikes, which severely damaged IS’s operational capabilities in the region.

The military operation in Puntland has been an important step towards weakening the influence of IS in Somalia, resulting in significant development in the region and improved security for local communities. However, there remains a continued need for global support and resources for lasting peace and stability in the region. The success of the airstrikes underscored their importance in counter-terrorism efforts. Sustained vigilance and international cooperation will be essential for the complete defeat of the militants.
