Kenya and Somalia have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening diplomatic, economic, and regional cooperation through a series of high-level engagements and strategic agreements.

Bilateral Talks to Fast-Track Memoranda of Understanding

Prime Cabinet Secretary of Kenya, Musalia Mudavadi, and Somalia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abdisalam Omer, held productive bilateral talks on the sidelines of the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Ministers’ Summit.

The two leaders agreed to accelerate meetings of the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) to finalize key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs).

These MoUs are set to enhance collaboration across multiple sectors, including trade, infrastructure, security, and cultural exchange.

“Kenya and Somalia share longstanding cultural and socioeconomic ties dating back to the pre-independence era,” said Mudavadi, emphasizing that the relationship is rooted in a shared vision of peace, stability, and regional prosperity.

Kenya Supports to Somalia’s Peace and Security

Somalia’s Foreign Minister expressed deep gratitude for Kenya’s unwavering support over the past 25 years.
Particularly in its peacekeeping efforts through the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).

Mudavadi reiterated Kenya’s commitment to good neighborliness and regional collaboration, pledging to deepen bilateral engagement for mutual benefit.

The meeting was also attended by:

    • Willy Bett, Kenya’s Ambassador to China
    • Hodan Osman Abdi, Somalia’s Ambassador to China
    • Ambassador Jane Makori, Director of Asian Affairs, Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs
    • Said Jama Mire, Somalia’s Director of Asian Affairs

Kenya and Somalia Relations Under the East African Community (EAC)

The high-level talks follow a similar meeting between President William Ruto of Kenya and President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia during the African Union Extraordinary Summit on CAADP held earlier in 2025.

President Ruto praised the growing ties, stating on X (formerly Twitter):

“Kenya and Somalia have excellent diplomatic relations that have progressively deepened since Somalia joined the East African Community last year.”

Somalia’s Entry into the East African Community Paves the Way for Deeper Regional Integration

Somalia officially submitted its instruments of ratification for the Treaty of Access to the EAC on March 4, 2024, in Arusha, Tanzania.

This historic move was welcomed by Kenya, with Prime Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi stating that:

“Somalia’s entry into the EAC will significantly boost its trade and investment ties, and position it as a key economic player in the region and beyond.”

Outlook: A Promising Future for Kenya-Somalia Relations

With the groundwork now laid for enhanced cooperation through MoUs and regional platforms like the EAC, Kenya and Somalia are poised to advance shared goals in economic development, peacebuilding, and regional integration.

This strategic partnership not only reflects a renewed diplomatic momentum but also highlights both countries’ commitment to sustainable growth and long-term stability in the Horn of Africa.
