Galmudug local elections officially kicked off early in the morning as people walked to polling stations across towns and villages to pick their leaders. People woke up early in Dhusamareb and other locations to stand in line and cast their ballots in a process that many residents have been waiting to see for a long time. This is the first time the state is holding direct voting like this so there is a lot of attention on how things will unfold throughout the day.

Many people in Dhusamareb were eager to see how Galmudug local elections would be organized after weeks of political debate and community discussions. Streets in the state capital were busy as security forces moved around to keep order and ensure that voters could move safely to the polling places. Citizens of different ages came out to participate because they want to have a say in who represents them at the local level.

Why Galmudug local elections are a major step for voters

Organizers say Galmudug local elections cover eleven distinct districts in two main areas called Galgaduud and South Mudug. These areas have been preparing for this event for months getting registration lists ready and setting up centers where people can mark their ballots safely. Local news reported that people started queuing before sunrise in many places showing that people really care about who gets elected to handle local affairs and regional seats.

Looking at the numbers shows that Galmudug local elections involve over two hundred thousand registered citizens casting their votes. These voters are choosing leaders for two hundred and forty three local council seats as well as eighty nine seats in the regional parliament. That is a lot of positions to fill at once which makes this one of the biggest voting exercises the region has ever seen.

Political groups like the ruling Justice and Solidarity Party campaigned heavily before Galmudug local elections began this week. Other smaller political organizations also put up candidates hoping to gain seats in the councils and the regional parliament. The competition has been intense with speeches posters and meetings taking place in various neighborhoods over the past month as parties tried to convince people to support their vision.

Criticism surrounding Galmudug local elections and federal history

Opponents point out that previous votes in Mogadishu had issues and they worry Galmudug local elections might face similar criticism regarding fairness. Opposition leaders have repeatedly raised concerns about how former votes were handled in South West State as well. They argued that those earlier processes lacked full transparency and were managed in a way that favored the authorities in power rather than giving everyone an equal chance.

Because of those past events some critics remain skeptical about the current process. They want independent observers to watch every step closely to make sure votes are counted accurately without any interference. Despite these concerns officials running the process insist that everything has been set up to be transparent and fair for all participating parties.

People living in Galmudug have different opinions about what this vote will achieve. Some believe that voting directly for council members will bring better services like cleaner water roads and local schools. Others feel that until political trust is fully built between the government and opposition parties elections will always face doubts from the public.

In the end people hope that Galmudug local elections set a good example for democratic progress in Somalia despite all the ongoing challenges. Watching how this election finishes will give everyone a clearer idea of whether direct voting can work smoothly in other parts of the country in the coming years.
