Handling a medical emergency requires a very calm mind and fast actions to save a person’s life before the doctors arrive. Many people freeze when someone suddenly collapses or gets badly injured right in front of them because they do not know what to do. This lack of knowledge can make a dangerous situation much worse within just a few minutes. Knowing the correct steps for handling a medical emergency ensures that you can provide the best help when every single second counts.

Seven Essential Actions for Handling a Medical Emergency

The very first thing you must do when a crisis happens is to check the surrounding area for any immediate dangers. You cannot help an injured person if you get hurt yourself by oncoming traffic falling rocks or broken electric wires. Once you are sure the area is completely safe you can approach the victim and check if they are awake and breathing. This initial safety check stands out as a golden rule when handling a medical emergency anywhere.

The second step is to call your local emergency number immediately or tell a specific person in the crowd to do it for you. You need to give the ambulance service clear information about your exact location and what happened to the victim. While waiting for professional paramedics to arrive you must check if the person is breathing properly by watching their chest move up and down. If the person is completely unconscious and not breathing you need to start CPR immediately by pushing hard and fast on the center of their chest.

    • Call the local ambulance service immediately and give your clear location
    • Stop any heavy bleeding by applying direct pressure with a clean cloth

Controlling the Situation While Waiting for Help

If the victim is bleeding heavily from a wound your third priority during handling a medical emergency is to stop the blood loss. You can do this by pressing a clean piece of cloth or a bandage firmly against the injury until the bleeding stops. If the injury is on an arm or a leg try to raise that limb above the level of the heart to slow down the blood flow.

“Keeping your own panic under control is the most powerful tool you have when trying to save someone’s life.”

The fourth action is to keep the patient warm and comfortable while treating them for shock. When a human body faces a huge physical trauma the blood pressure drops quickly and the skin becomes cold and pale. You can help them by covering their body with a warm blanket and talking to them in a soft reassuring voice to keep them calm. This mental support is a huge part of handling a medical emergency because panic can actually make a patient’s physical condition worse.

Important Mistakes to Avoid During a Crisis

The fifth thing to remember is never to move a person who might have a broken neck or a serious spinal injury. Moving them incorrectly can cause permanent paralysis or severe internal damage unless they are in immediate danger from a fire or an explosion. Sixth never give food or water to an unconscious person because they can easily choke on it and stop breathing completely.

Finally always stay with the patient until the professional medical team arrives on the scene to take over. When the paramedics get there you must give them a clear report about what happened and how long the person has been unconscious. By following these exact guidelines for handling a medical emergency you can become a true hero and protect your family and friends during an unexpected health crisis.
