Somalia political crisis is getting worse every single day as big protests fill the streets of Mogadishu right now. People are very angry because the constitutional term of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and any extra time he stays in power is totally illegal. The opposition is smart and they are spreading the crowds across different parts of the city instead of just one place so the government cannot easily stop them. Former President Farmaajo even warned the current government not to block these protests or put bad restrictions on normal citizens who want to voice their anger.

On social media inside Somalia everyone is talking about how the military might block main roads and close movement around government buildings which makes regular people very scared for their safety. Activists are online begging the police not to use violence against the protesters or make political arrests just to silence the opposition.

How the Somalia Political Crisis Destroys Democratic Hope

The biggest issue right now is that the government is trying to force handpicked leaders into regional states like Galmudug and Hirshabelle and South West State. This shows everyone that the upcoming elections are not fair or transparent at all because they are just choosing their friends instead of letting people vote. Many reports show that the president is actually taking international money meant to fight terrorism and using it to destroy his political enemies instead.

This deep Somalia political crisis is also heavily damaging the army and security forces. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is taking troops that international partners trained to fight Al-Shabaab and turning them into weapons against his political rivals. While the government focuses on fighting its own people they are also stealing national resources by taking land from regular citizens in Mogadishu and selling it for profit.

This greed has caused massive security problems in South West State because the federal government ignored the local police forces there on purpose. Now the government is trying to start new troubles in Puntland and Jubaland which is very dangerous because it allows terrorist groups like Al-Shabaab and ISIS to grow bigger and take over more land while the politicians fight each other.

Corruption and violence are making the Somalia political crisis much worse because the president gives all the top jobs to his close relatives. For example he made his own daughter Jihan the official presidential advisor for international affairs which makes no sense to local experts. He also made his son-in-law Abdi Roble the head of the Somali Development and Reconstruction Bank. Experienced military leaders and security chiefs are being fired every day just to be replaced by people from the president’s own clan and political party so he can guarantee he stays in power forever. They are openly using foreign aid money to buy the loyalty of tribal elders and local politicians instead of helping poor people.

The Deepening Impact of the Somalia Political Crisis

Things turned very bloody today because the federal government launched an armed attack against political opponents right in the middle of Mogadishu. This terrible violence shows how the Somalia political crisis has reached a point where innocent families are running away from their homes because they fear a massive war inside the capital city. Somalia does not just have a normal security issue anymore but it has a massive leadership failure because an expired president is making decisions that push the country into danger.

Instead of sitting down for political talks the rulers chose to use weapons and bullets against the opposition which started these street battles and broke the peace. Watching families pack their bags and run away from Mogadishu proves that this government cannot rule anymore. The Somali leadership chose war instead of political solutions and this bad choice is driving the whole nation straight into a dark civil war.
