The preparation begins with the rich scent of roasting coffee beans in a small skillet. In Somali hospitality serving traditional spice coffee known as bun is a core tradition that brings people together. The coffee is often cooked with spices like cardamom and cloves which gives the entire house a wonderful smell. People sip the warm drink slowly while eating sweet dates or fried treats like halwa.

Along with the coffee comes the traditional frankincense called unsi which is burned in a clay burner. The rich sweet smoke from unsi fills the rooms and stays on clothes making everything smell clean and welcoming. In Somali hospitality burning this sweet incense shows honor to visitors and creates a peaceful mood for everyone. The host might move the burner around so the fragrant smoke reaches every corner of the room.

Food is another giant part of Somali hospitality because sharing meals shows deep care. A giant platter of rice or pasta with tender meat and bananas is placed in the center for everyone to share. People sit together talk about their lives and enjoy the food in a relaxed relaxed atmosphere. Hosts will constantly offer more food to make sure no guest leaves the table hungry.
