Armed conflict erupted in Somalia’s Gedo region as federal forces led by controversial commander Abdirashid Janan launched an assault on Jubaland regional troops stationed in Tuulo Aamin, a village near Beled-Hawo.

    Heavy Fighting Sparks Civilian Panic

Local residents reported intense exchanges of heavy weaponry between the two sides, triggering widespread panic and displacement.

Families living near the conflict zone have begun fleeing their homes, fearing further escalation.

This latest clash underscores the deepening power struggle between Somalia’s federal government and Jubaland administration, with tensions in the Gedo region reaching a critical point.

Political Accusations for Somalia Federal Forces

Jubaland officials accused the federal government of deliberately targeting peaceful towns under its control.

The attack comes just weeks after federal forces seized Beled-Hawo city, intensifying the standoff.

No official casualty figures have been released, and both sides have yet to issue formal statements regarding the outcome of the confrontation.

    Abdirashid Janan’s Controversial Role

Commander Abdirashid Janan, who led the federal offensive, has previously been accused by the United Nations of committing crimes against humanity.
    Allegations include:

    • Killings and torture
    • Unlawful detention
    • Illegal renditions

These abuses reportedly occurred between 2014 and 2015 during Janan’s tenure as a regional security chief.

In December 2015, Mogadishu’s regional court issued an arrest warrant for Janan in connection with killings in the Gedo region.
