The Somalia political failure is reaching a breaking point as the country faces a massive constitutional wall that threatens to tear down years of progress. Everyone is looking at the calendar with fear because the date of May 15 2026 marks the official end of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud’s legal term in office. After this specific day any attempt to stay in power or push for a term extension will be completely unconstitutional and illegal under the Somali transition laws. The people are tired of waiting for real change while the leadership seems more focused on holding onto their seats than following the rules of the land.

The local elections and the Somalia political failure

One of the biggest issues fueling the Somalia political crisis right now is how the federal government is handling the regional elections in places like Galmudug Hirshabelle and South West State. Instead of letting people choose their leaders the government is forcing unwanted candidates on these regions which makes the whole process look like political appointments rather than a fair vote. This lack of transparency is making people lose faith in the system because it feels like democracy is being replaced by hand picked loyalists. When the government interferes like this it only makes the Somalia political crisis deeper and harder to solve through peaceful means.

The security situation is also getting much worse because of how the national forces are being used lately. It is very worrying to see that President Hassan Sheikh is using elite troops who were trained by international partners to fight Al-Shabaab to instead target his own political rivals. Turning counter terrorism forces into a political tool is a dangerous move that helps the terrorists more than the citizens. This misuse of power is a core part of the Somalia political crisis that international donors are starting to notice with great concern.

Land grabbing and the Somalia political failure

While the politicians fight over power the average person in Mogadishu is suffering from a massive wave of corruption and land grabbing. The government has been caught taking over private lands belonging to ordinary Somali citizens and selling them off for profit which is basically state sponsored looting. This economic injustice is happening at the same time as a total breakdown in security across the capital and other provinces. The Somalia political crisis is not just about who sits in the palace but about the fact that people don’t feel safe in their own homes or on their own property anymore.

The legislative branch is also in total chaos right now which adds more fuel to the Somalia political crisis. Already a group of 105 members of parliament have stepped forward to announce that the constitutional mandate of the parliament actually ended on April 15 2026. This means that both the executive and the legislative branches are operating in a legal vacuum without any right to make new laws or decisions. Without a valid parliament the government has no backbone and this contributes heavily to the ongoing Somalia political failure that is paralyzing the nation.

If there is no clear path to a transition in the next few days the country might fall into a dark hole of violence. The Somalia political failure requires the leaders to step down when their time is up instead of trying to bend the law to stay in power.

We cannot afford another period of instability where the elite get rich from selling land while the youth have no future. The Somalia political failure will only end when the law is respected and the voices of the people in the regions are finally heard without interference from Mogadishu. The world is watching to see if the president will leave peacefully or if the Somalia political failure will lead to a total collapse of the state.
