Regional security cooperation is becoming the main focus for leaders in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula after a high-level meeting in Djibouti. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of Somalia and the head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Rashad Al-Alimi sat down to discuss how to handle the growing threats in their shared waters.

This move toward regional security Alliance comes at a very tense time because armed groups and pirates are starting to work together more often. The two leaders talked about how they can stop terrorists and pirates from moving across the borders and using the sea to launch attacks. By strengthening regional security Alliance both countries hope to protect the international shipping lanes that are vital for the whole world especially in the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea.

Strengthening regional security cooperation against terrorism

The meeting was not just for show because it included top security officials like Mahmoud Al-Subaihi who know exactly how hard it is to fight these groups on the ground. A big part of the regional security cooperation strategy is sharing information about how groups like Al-Shabaab and the Houthis might be helping each other.

Recent reports suggest that pirates in Somalia and armed groups in Yemen are forming dangerous links which makes the regional security cooperation even more urgent than before. They want to make sure that the sea between the two countries does not become a playground for criminals who want to disrupt global trade. Both sides agreed that without a unified regional security cooperation plan the stability of the entire region will stay at risk for a long time.

The hijacking of M/T Eureka and the need for action

One of the main reasons for this sudden push for regional security cooperation was the recent hijacking of the oil tanker M/T Eureka. This ship was taken near the Yemeni coast and then dragged toward the Somali shores which proves that the pirates and armed groups are working across national lines. This specific incident is why regional security cooperation is being treated as a top priority right now by both governments.

In the Puntland region officials are already investigating if the pirates who took the tanker have direct ties to groups in Yemen like the Houthis. This shows that the regional security cooperation needs to be very deep and involve local authorities as well as the national leaders to be effective.

    Mutual support and sovereignty

During the talks President Al-Alimi made it clear that Yemen fully supports the unity and sovereignty of Somalia while the Somali side promised to keep supporting the Yemeni government in international meetings. This political trust is the foundation for any successful regional security cooperation in the future. They are trying to show the world that despite the wars and problems inside their own countries they can still work together for a common goal.

This regional security cooperation is also a message to the armed groups that they cannot just hide in the gaps between the two nations anymore. If the two countries can really coordinate their navies and intelligence then the regional security cooperation could actually change the map of security in the Middle East and Africa.

    Looking ahead at the challenges

Even with all the good intentions there are still many obstacles to making this regional security cooperation a reality on the water. Both Yemen and Somalia have limited resources and their militaries are already busy fighting internal battles against different factions.

To make the regional security cooperation work they will likely need help from international partners who also want to keep the shipping lanes open. But the fact that they are talking face to face is a huge step forward for the regional security cooperation movement.

In the end the people living on both sides of the sea just want to feel safe and see their economies grow again. The success of this regional security cooperation will be measured by whether the number of hijackings and terror attacks goes down in the coming months.

If the leaders stay committed to the plan then the regional security cooperation could be the start of a much more stable era for everyone.

It is a long road ahead but focusing on regional security cooperation is definitely the right move for 2026. Everyone is watching to see what the next practical steps will be to turn these words into real security on the waves.
