As expected, Al-Shabab launched a chain of bombings in Somalia.
Few days ago they bombed a recruitment facility in Mogadishu.

Yesterday, a suicide blast ripped through a Somali National Army (SNA) recruitment facility in Mogadishu’s Hodan district.

This attack caused at least 15 new army recruits dead and dozens wounded, officials confirmed.
Al-Shabaab quickly claimed responsibility for the attack on its affiliated media channels.

Why General Gordon military base was Targeted?

The General Gordon facility has been central to the government’s accelerated recruitment drive ahead of the African Union troop drawdown scheduled for later this year.

Striking new recruits serves a dual purpose for the militants: eroding public confidence in the army and discouraging enlistment.

Defense Minister Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur condemned the “heinous attack on Somalia’s future defenders,” vowing to tighten security protocols at all enlistment centers and continue the nationwide offensive against the extremist group.

    Presidential Directives:

    A presidential directive has ordered:

    1. Immediate security audit of military installations in Mogadishu.
    2. Emergency medical support for the wounded, with airlifts to Turkey for severe cases.
    3. Joint SNA and police task force to track militant sleeper cells inside the capital.

Broader Implications of General Gordon military base bombing:

    • Recruitment Impact: The attack could slow the government’s goal of adding 15,000 soldiers before the African Union Transition Mission (ATMIS) fully exits.
    • Urban Security: It underscores al-Shabaab’s continuing ability to stage high-profile strikes inside heavily guarded zones, despite losing rural territory.
    • International Support: The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) and the U.S. Embassy in Mogadishu both issued statements reaffirming support for Somalia’s stabilization efforts.

Hodan bombing illustrates the steep security challenges Somalia faces as it races to build a self-reliant army.

Al-Shabaab’s deadly message is clear: recruitment centers are now front-line targets in the struggle for the country’s future.
