Baidoa military clashes became the main talk of the town after heavy fighting started on Thursday night between the official security forces of the Southwest State and armed groups that still listen to the old regional leader. The whole mess took place in a small countryside area called Ido Dagoli which sits just north of the city causing a lot of panic among the local families who live nearby. Many people got hurt or killed during the intense exchange of bullets although the exact numbers of the victims could not be confirmed right away by the hospital workers. This fresh violence shows how quickly political arguments can turn into dangerous street battles when leaders refuse to share power peacefully.

The official response to the Baidoa military clashes

On Friday morning the Ministry of Security for the Southwest State released a formal statement to explain what happened during the Baidoa clashes to the worried public. The government officials claimed that their regional troops successfully stopped a surprise attack on the city that was planned by the fighters who support the former president Laftagareen. According to their report several members of the armed group were killed on the spot and the security forces managed to take away a large amount of weapons and ammunition left behind on the dirt ground. However the ministry chose not to say anything about whether their own government soldiers suffered any dead or wounded men during the heavy midnight shootout.

The local authorities are now asking the mothers fathers and relatives of the young fighters who follow Laftagareen to step in before things get even bloodier. They want these families to talk to the young boys and convince them to leave the armed group right away instead of wasting their lives in the bush. The administration promised that any rebel who drops his gun and leaves the militia will get a full pardon and be allowed to return to his community without going to jail. This offer of mercy is an attempt to reduce the Baidoa military clashes by shrinking the number of soldiers the old leader has in the rural areas.

Regional trouble behind the Baidoa military clashes

This new wave of instability is spreading across the Bay region because a lot of people are still angry about how Laftagareen was removed from his high political seat. Some of the troops who used to protect him have now gathered in the deep jungle areas to launch a hit and run campaign against the new Southwest administration and the central federal government of Somalia. These sneaky operations are the main reason why the Baidoa military clashes keep happening making the roads unsafe for traders and normal travelers who just want to move between towns.

What the Baidoa military clashes mean for the local citizens

Because of these continuous Baidoa military clashes the city has turned into a giant hotspot for political tension and fear. The local residents are caught in the middle of a bad game of influence between the regional bosses and the big politicians who live in Mogadishu. If the Baidoa military clashes do not stop very soon the markets will close down and the price of food will go up making life even harder for poor families who are already struggling to buy basic things.

Many political experts think that these Baidoa military clashes will continue until both sides sit down in a room and agree on how to run the next election fairly. The current leaders cannot just rely on military power to fix a political disagreement because force usually makes the rebels even angrier. Everyone is praying that the local elders can use their traditional wisdom to bring peace before the Baidoa military clashes turn into a full civil war inside the state.

In conclusion the occurrence of the Baidoa military clashes is a sad reminder of how fragile the peace is in this part of Somalia today. The young people need schools and jobs instead of being handed heavy rifles to fight for old politicians who live in safe houses.

Until a real agreement is reached about who has the legal right to rule the Thursdays and Fridays in this region will remain very loud dark and full of sorrow. The international helpers are watching closely hoping that the guns will go silent so that the country can focus on real development instead of burying more young soldiers every week.
