Human brain limits are becoming a huge topic of conversation lately because many experts are starting to realize that our minds might not be built to handle the weird pressure of sitting in a car that moves on its own. It sounds cool to just sit there while the computer steers the wheel but the truth is that human brain capacity make it very hard for us to stay focused when we are not the ones in control of the machine. When you drive a normal car your hands and eyes are busy and your mind is locked into the road but in an autonomous vehicle your brain starts to wander off or get sleepy which is very dangerous if the car suddenly needs you to take over in a split second. This is a massive psychological problem that scientists are warning us about because they see that human brain capacity prevent us from being good “backup drivers” who can jump into action after twenty minutes of doing nothing. The stress of waiting for something to go wrong without knowing when it will happen is a new kind of mental exhaustion that we have never had to deal with before in the history of travel.

    Human brain limits

The big issue is that our biology hasn’t changed as fast as the software in these fancy new cars and we are still using the same old instincts from thousands of years ago. Experts say that human brain limits mean we have a very hard time trusting a robot with our lives especially when the robot makes a choice that a human would never make like braking for no reason. Because of these human brain limits many people feel a deep sense of anxiety or even motion sickness when they are not the ones steering the ship because the inner ear and the eyes are getting different signals. If you are just a passenger in a taxi you expect someone else to be in charge but when you are in the driver’s seat your mind is wired to be the boss and the conflict between the computer and your brain creates a lot of silent tension. We are seeing more reports of drivers feeling completely drained after a short trip in a self-driving car because their subconscious was working overtime trying to watch the car’s every move.

Why developers often ignore human brain limits in new tech

It seems like the companies making these cars are so focused on the sensors and the cameras that they completely forgot about the person sitting behind the wheel and their human brain limits. They assume that as long as the car can see the lines on the road everything will be fine but they don’t realize that a bored human is a dangerous human on the highway. This lack of understanding of human brain limits means that the transition to fully automated driving might be much slower and more difficult than the advertisements on television make it look. We need to figure out a way to keep the person in the car engaged without making them do all the work but finding that middle ground is a nightmare for engineers who don’t study psychology. If we keep pushing the technology without respecting the human brain limits we might end up with more accidents caused by people who simply weren’t mentally prepared to react when the computer got confused by a bit of rain or some construction cones.

The psychological toll and human brain limits on the road

There is also the problem of “moral choice” which is something that really tests the human brain limits when we think about how a car decides who to save in a crash. If a computer makes a cold mathematical choice to hit one thing instead of another it can be very traumatic for the person inside who has to live with that result even if they weren’t steering. Our human brain limits make it hard for us to accept responsibility for things that a machine did in our name and this could lead to a lot of legal and emotional trouble in the future. We are already seeing that some people are getting too comfortable and taking naps or watching movies which shows that their human brain limits for paying attention are being reached much faster than we thought. It is a strange paradox where the more the car does for us the less capable we become of helping the car when it actually needs a human touch to survive a tricky situation.

We have to ask ourselves if we are forcing a technology on a species that just isn’t ready for it yet from a mental point of view. The human brain limits are not something we can just upgrade with a new piece of software or a faster chip because they are part of who we are as people. We might need to change how we teach driving or even how we design our roads to make sure that the humans and the robots can get along without causing a nervous breakdown for the driver. It is a fascinating and scary time to be on the road and we are all part of a giant experiment to see if we can overcome these human brain limits or if we will always need to keep our hands firmly on the wheel to feel safe.
