Will the Somali people survive this period of deep political uncertainty while the central government takes steps that many think are destroying the future of the country? In the regions of Galmudug and Hirshabelle and South West the federal government is trying to force through candidates that the local people simply do not want. Instead of having a real and fair vote these moves look more like political appointments than actual elections. This is making people lose trust in the democratic process because it feels like the results are decided before any vote even happens.

Will the Somali people survive the end of the term

A major issue right now is that the constitutional term for President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud is coming to an end very soon on May 15 2026. According to the law any attempt to extend this term after that date is totally illegal and unconstitutional. People are worried that there is a plan to stay in power longer than allowed which would cause a huge political mess. Will the Somali people survive if the legal rules of the country are ignored just to keep the current leaders in office? The stability of the nation depends on following the constitution but right now it looks like those rules are being treated as suggestions rather than laws.

There is also a big concern about how the President is using the military. Forces that were trained by international partners specifically to fight Al-Shabaab are now being used for political reasons. It seems the President is using these elite soldiers to label his political rivals as enemies which is a dangerous game to play. Instead of focusing on the real security threats facing the country the government is using its power to silence anyone who disagrees with them.

Will the Somali people survive when the very tools meant to protect them from terrorists are being used to settle political scores? This shift in focus is making the whole country more dangerous because the real enemies are being ignored while the government fights its own citizens.

On top of the security issues there is a lot of talk about corruption and the looting of resources. In Mogadishu specifically the government is being accused of taking land away from regular citizens and selling it for profit. This kind of behavior shows a complete lack of respect for the rights of the people. When a government starts stealing land from its own people it creates a feeling of hopelessness and anger. Will the Somali people survive this level of greed while they are already struggling with so many other problems?

The security situation in Mogadishu and other provinces is not getting any better. Even though there is a lot of talk about progress there is still a high level of lawlessness and violence. People are not feeling safe in their own homes or on the streets. If the government is too busy seizing land and fighting political battles they cannot provide the safety that everyone needs. Will the Somali people survive the daily threats of violence when the leadership is distracted by their own interests?

The international community is watching closely but the real impact is felt by the locals. Will the Somali people survive the lack of transparency in the regional elections? Many are asking Will the Somali people survive the potential for a constitutional crisis after May 15? If things do not change soon the tension could boil over. Will the Somali people survive the misuse of the national army against civilians? Finally Will the Somali people survive the economic hardship caused by the loss of their property? It is a very difficult time for everyone in the country right now and people are just hoping for a peaceful way out of this mess.
